ILST (Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troop)

What is it?
Handing a Scout a badge of office doesn’t automatically make them a good leader. They need to be trained. They need to take the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, or ILST.
ILST is the first step in the continuum of youth leadership training. It’s a prerequisite for advanced leadership courses, including National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE).
Troop 834 offers ILST on the last weekend of August at South Park Scout Cabin over a short weekend.
What is offered?
This training course is conducted in three modules — each 60 to 90 minutes. Upon completion of ILST, the Scout is qualified to wear the “Trained” emblem on their uniform.
- Module 1 – Troop Organization includes a description of each leadership position in the troop, including roles and responsibilities, troop organization, and introductions to vision and servant leadership.
- Module 2 – Tools of Leadership covers some core skill sets to help the Scout lead, including communicating, planning and teaching.
- Module 3 – Leadership and Teamwork incorporates additional leadership tools for the Scout, including discussions of teams and team characteristics, the stages of team development and leadership, inclusion/using your team, ethics and values of a leader, and a more in-depth review of vision.
Format of the training
- The class is taught primarly by scouts that have been through NYLT as well as held senior leadership roles in the troop.
- Adults provide the support structure of the weekend to enable scouts to deliver the program. Such as reservations, planning and cooking.
- The weekend begins Saturday at 2pm in order to give youth a chance to participate in other activities as needed so attendance is less of an issue with busy schedules.
- The sessions are held Saturday evening through late Sunday morning and spread out over other activities, camping and eating so as to not overwhelm the scouts with information overload.
